Butler, Fugitive Slaves, United States Senate, Speech, Description An account of the resource Andrew Pickens Butler of South Carolina, a close friend and political ally to James Murray Mason, spoke on Jan. 24th in support of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. This selection from the Appendix to the Congressional Globe contains the resolutions of the law as well as opening remarks from Senator Butler's speech on it. Butler, like Mason, was an acolyte of John C. Calhoun, in addition to being a staunch advocate of Slavery.
